Holiday cards

Shout out to anyone who wants a holiday card this year.

I plan to start writing ALL my cards this week and post by next weekend which means I'm 3 weeks ahead of final posting dates so they should arrive on time even for folks overseas!

If I already have your address you'll be on the list but please feel free to drop contact deets below to make sure - post is screened.

Today (Saturday) I am attempting to deal with the utter chaos in my bedroom, repot some houseplants and batch cook for next week - so being able to sit down and have some time to write cards would be most welcome!

Today's Smoothie

Today we made a smoothie with:

1 cup Pom pomegranate-blueberry juice
1 cup Brown Cow vanilla yogurt
1 banana
1/2 cup frozen strawberries
1/2 cup ice

The result is bright red-violet and on the thin side.  It has a deeper fruit flavor from the pomegranate -- a nice fall smoothie.

Science

Light has been hiding a magnetic secret for nearly 200 years

New research shows that light’s magnetic field is far more influential than scientists once believed. The team found that this magnetic component significantly affects how light rotates as it passes through certain materials. Their work challenges a 180-year-old understanding of the Faraday Effect and opens pathways to new optical and magnetic technologies.

Birdfeeding

Today is cloudy, rainy, and cool.

I fed the birds. I haven't seen any activity today.

The birdbaths are already full from the rain.

EDIT 11/21/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I've seen several sparrows and house finches at the fly-through feeder, which is basically a little roof over a tray of seed. I can see why they'd prefer it today.

EDIT 11/21/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

I am done for the night.

Follow Friday 11-21-25

Got any Follow Friday-related posts to share this week? Comment here with the link(s).

Here's the plan: every Friday, let's recommend some people and/or communities to follow on Dreamwidth. That's it. No complicated rules, no "pass this on to 7.328 friends or your cat will die".

Poem: "Trying to Be Better"

This poem is spillover from the October 2025 [community profile] crowdfunding Creative Jam. It was inspired by a prompt from [personal profile] readera. It also fills the "Do you trust me?" square in my 10-1-25 card for the Fall Festival Bingo. This poem has been sponsored by [personal profile] janetmiles. It belongs to the Frank the Crank arc in the Big One thread of the Polychrome Heroics series. It follows "The Clearest Signal" and "Set on Continuous Improvement," so read those first or this won't make as much sense.

Admin: Changes to the guidelines and badges

Just so you all know, we’ve added a couple of things to the comm guidelines, and one change to the Achievement Badges.

Guidelines
  1. Added to the Submissions and Posting guidelines:

Characters in romantic/sexual ships should be 16 or older, regardless of the rating of the fanwork.

Fanworks of younger characters in relationships are allowed IF the characters are about equal in age and development AND the fanwork is rated General Audiences or Teen and Up. Mature or Explicit fanworks of underage characters are not permitted. For non-human characters or characters with unusual rates of ageing, please use your best judgement.

  2. We've also added in our policy on AI/LLM content (which was previously announced here). Please check that policy if you are including AI/LLM-generated content in your entry. We will tag these works "filter: ai content".

Achievement Badges
  1. Added to the Challenge Streaks:

    Streak Aid
If you have a year-long (or more) streak, and you miss a deadline, you can claim a Streak Aid. With a Streak Aid, you can post a work for the missed prompt by the end of the next round, and we will consider your streak unbroken.

If you use a Streak Aid, you cannot claim another Streak Aid for at least 12 months.

If you have any questions, please let us know. :-)

Challenge 498: First Aid

Our new challenge is:

FIRST AID

As always, you can interpret the prompt literally or figuratively, in whatever way works for you.

Each work created for this challenge should be posted as a new entry to the comm. Posting starts now and continues up until the challenge ends at 4pm Pacific Time on Monday, December 1st. No sign-up required.

Mods will tag your work with fandom and challenge. When you've posted entries to three consecutive challenges, you will earn a name tag, and we'll go back and tag all your previous entries with your name.

All kinds of fanworks in all fandoms are welcome. Please have a look at our guidelines before you play. If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact a mod. And if you have any suggestions for future challenges, you can leave them in the comments of this post.

You can view stats for [community profile] fan_flashworks entries and search and filter them via the Community Report and Creator Report. See our FAQ post for more details.

Also, keep an eye out for the next [community profile] ffw_social post, which will go up in the next couple of days. If you haven't joined the [community profile] ffw_social comm, it's never too late to come and check it out. (Posts are locked, which means you have to join to see them.)
