nothingbutcowboyboots: (Blair & Jim)
Have you ever wanted to change your name, leave your old life behind and start again in a small town in the middle of nowhere? Me too. And while I haven't quite done that, this is the blogging version of that. A new blog.

I'm not a new blogger. I've been blogging in one form or another for over 25 years. But I needed a clean slate. My friends list was full of dead journals, people I'd forgotten, so much history and drama. It was very too much. And the thought of cleaning through and curating it seemed far too daunting.

So I did the next best thing, and I'm starting again. A new journal. And I'm filled with excitement to start using it, to start meeting active users, to have a fun reading page again. It's like back-to-school or a new year, randomly a third of the way through December.

Like a lot of people, I have struggled with my mental health through and since the COVID-19 pandemic but I am feeling like I'm coming back out of the other side. There's a light in the distance that isn't a locomotive. And I think my plan for 2023 is to fall back in love with fandom. To love things for the sake of loving them.

Hi. Welcome to my new journal. I'm Colt and my pronouns are hey/they. I'm 47, married to Blaze and we have two children, Blair who's 1213 and Eliot who's 10. I tend to describe myself as 'just another fandom whore' and love Supernatural, Leverage, The Librarians, Marvel, DC, Doctor Who, Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate etc. And pretty much anything with Mario in it. I love to cook, I love visiting museums and historical sites. I nearly always have music playing, my nose in a book or my switch - and sometimes all three at once!

This evening Blair & Eliot asked to watch some classic Doctor Who. This is not something Blaze and I are ever going to complain about. They love new Who and have never seen any of the old stuff, generally turning their noses up and certainly not interested in anything in black & white. I've wanted to share it with them but wasn't going to force it on them if they didn't want to watch it.

I grew up with Doctor Who. To show my age, Tom Baker was my first doctor and along with Jon Pertwee remains my favourite. Although I do adore all of them. So I was thrilled when they asked about watching some of the old stuff. We talked about what to watch and decided to go all the way back to the beginning.

I made us a delicious (faux)chicken korma - recipe available on request - and we settled down with An Unearthly Child. And I'm pleased to report they thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd forgotten what a contradiction Susan is - one the one hand so smart, on the other so protected by her grandfather. And the kidnapping of the teachers. The tone is so different, it's much more of a serious proper BBC drama, the plot a little laughable at times but somehow still managing to be a little nerve-wracking and scary at places. Definitely very different to what the kids are used to but they've expressed an interest in watching more. So I'm calling it a resounding success!

And I need at least Doctor Who icon.
