Birdfeeding

I fed the birds. I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.
I put out water for the birds.
EDIT 9/24/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.
EDIT 9/24/26 -- I started planting the questionable acorns in places where I would like oak trees to grow.
EDIT 9/24/26 -- I cracked 10 yellow nectarine pits and got 10 good seeds, which I bagged in damp sand to cold-stratify in the fridge. The one red plum pit yielded nothing.

Ultra-fast fashion purchases may seem spontaneous, but price, convenience, and social pressure can outweigh sustainability concerns.
I dislike fashion in general and fast fashion in particular. However, I can only buy what someone else chooses to make and sell. Around here, the only place I can reliably find 100% cotton anything is a booth selling tie-dye at a street fair. I don't see linen or silk anymore. I see synthetics. I can't even find a whole package of 100% cotton underwear. >_< And I can't buy most clothes without trying them on, so I can't shop online. I buy the least-worst of whatever is available.

The initiative has already mapped more than 50,000 acres under restoration, with additional areas being added through its monitoring platform. Seeds from more than 150 native plant species have been collected and used in restoration activities, helping build a restoration supply chain that includes seed collectors, nurseries, restoration technicians, and monitoring services.
That's great news after the bit about the fungal network unraveling due to loss of grasslands.

I watered the new picnic table, recently planted bulbs, and telephone pole garden.
As it is now dark, I am done for the night.

Sep. 23rd, 2026 11:34 amysabetwordsmithThe most recent thing that made me think "Bend over and kiss your ass goodbye" is that scientists mapped the underground fungal network that connects most plants on Earth, finding that it is unraveling rapidly as grasslands and wetlands are destroyed. This network functions like a circulatory system to exchange resources, and like a nervous system to carry information. Most plants depend on it for survival functions and cannot live long without it. Few can really live independently of fungi -- mostly pioneer plants, some beach plants, desert species, underwater species, etc. designed to grow in conditions that really do not favor fungi.
