Have you ever wanted to change your name, leave your old life behind and start again in a small town in the middle of nowhere? Me too. And while I haven't quite done that, this is the blogging version of that. A new blog.

I'm not a new blogger. I've been blogging in one form or another for over 25 years. But I needed a clean slate. My friends list was full of dead journals, people I'd forgotten, so much history and drama. It was very too much. And the thought of cleaning through and curating it seemed far too daunting.

So I did the next best thing, and I'm starting again. A new journal. And I'm filled with excitement to start using it, to start meeting active users, to have a fun reading page again. It's like back-to-school or a new year, randomly a third of the way through December.

Like a lot of people, I have struggled with my mental health through and since the COVID-19 pandemic but I am feeling like I'm coming back out of the other side. There's a light in the distance that isn't a locomotive. And I think my plan for 2023 is to fall back in love with fandom. To love things for the sake of loving them.

Hi. Welcome to my new journal. I'm Colt and my pronouns are hey/they. I'm 47, married to Blaze and we have two children, Blair who's 1213 and Eliot who's 10. I tend to describe myself as 'just another fandom whore' and love Supernatural, Leverage, The Librarians, Marvel, DC, Doctor Who, Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate etc. And pretty much anything with Mario in it. I love to cook, I love visiting museums and historical sites. I nearly always have music playing, my nose in a book or my switch - and sometimes all three at once!

Is there anyone more annoying, frustrating, judgemental and rude as other parents at a school? Most of the time I can ignore them, I can be bemused by them but every once in a while I want to scream at them. That would not be helpful though, but this does give me the perfect vent opportunity.
Although I will say my pre-teen child is very good at putting them in their place with the perfect eyeroll.

And what is it that offends these other parents so much?
My children use my name.
They call me and Blaze 'Colt and Blaze', not mum and dad. The reason is very simple. Neither of us identify as female and are very uncomfortable with being called 'misum', I'm ok with being called 'dad' but Blaze isn't. We tried a few different alternative terms before we agreed, as a family to use names and it works perfectly for us.

According to these other parents however we're teaching our children to be 'disrespectful'.
No, Karen, we're teaching them that every single person on the planet is different, experiences life differently and should be referred to as they want to be - it doesn't matter how they look, you call them the name and pronouns that they ask you do. That is actually being respectful.

Now throw in the fact that in the last couple of months, Eliot has told us they don't know if they 'want to be a boy or a girl'. We sat down and talked about how they're feeling and what they want or need from us, and they have started to use they/them pronouns. They are currently thriving and it's wonderful to see.

Of course, these same parents think this is terrible and wrong and we're just confusing the child.

Yes Karen, you're right. Eliot is confused. That is why we're giving them the time, space, understanding, information and vocabulary they need to try and figure it out in their own time.
They're too young, apparently. Well they're old enough to know that they like dinosaurs, and art, and skateboarding, and football, that their favourite colour is green, that James and Grace are their best friends, they don't like bullies, and hate their name being shortened. I'm pretty sure they know themselves better than anyone else. And that includes their gender.
Another one we hear a lot is 'what if [they] change [their] mind'. Then they change their mind. We start referring to them in the way they request. Literally nothing else changes.

Isn't it absolutely terrible how we listen to our children and treat them with respect?

Snowflake Challenge #2 In your own space, write a promo, manifesto or primer for your fave character, ship or fandom. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I have been a Nintendo gamer since the 80s. Christmas 1986, 11 year old me received a NES for Christmas and fell completely in love. It was pretty life-changing. I remember playing Super Mario Bros for the first time, sitting there, right in front of the television for hours trying to beat the game. 2d side-scrolling platformers are still my favourite type of game and I still adore anything with Mario in them.

I have since had a SNES, an N64, a Gamecube, a Wii and a Switch. I'm very much a Nintendo gamer. I did have a Playstation when they came out and enjoyed a few games on it but my heart belongs to Nintendo.

For anyone who doesn't know, this is Mario. He's the title character of the Super Mario Bros game franchise, arguably the most recognisable video game character, the mascot of Nintendo, and has appeared in over 200 video games!

Mario is an Italian plumber who lives in the Mushroom Kingdom and spends an awful lot of time trying to rescue Princess Peach from the villain Bowser.

His first game appearance was in 1981 as the player character in the arcade game Donkey Kong (one of the earliest platform games, incidentally). He didn't even have a name at this point and was a carpenter referred to as either 'Jumpman' or 'Mr Video', but he was still trying to save the girl - although he was rescuing Pauline from Donkey Kong by running and jumping on platforms, and climbing ladders to ascend a construction site.

In 1985, Mario became the star of the Super Mario series of platform games starting with Super Mario Bros. The Super Mario games established the setting of the Mushroom Kingdom, and Mario is usually the player characters. He is often joined by his brother Luigi and by the dinosaur Yoshi among other members of the series cast. As platform games, they involve the player character running and jumping across platforms and atop enemies in themed levels. The games have simple plots, typically with Mario and Luigi rescuing the kidnapped Princess Peach from the primary antagonist, Bowser.

At least one Super Mario game has been released for every major Nintendo video game console. There are more than 20 games in the series.

After Super Mario Bros, Mario began to branch off to different genres. These include puzzle games such as Dr. Mario, role-playing games such as Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi, and sports games such as Mario Kart and Mario Tennis. He has appeared in other Nintendo titles, such as the Super Smash Bros fighting games.

The overall Mario franchise now includes other forms of media, including television series, comic books, a films and theme park attractions. And with more than 750 million units sold worldwide, Mario is the bestselling video game franchise of all time.

I used to read a lot, but like a lot of my hobbies and interests, it's fallen by the wayside over the last 4 or 5 years. I was always a complete bookworm when I was younger, it was one of the many things I was bullied for in school - but luckily I didn't let it stop me and continued to read voraciously as a teen and young adult.

But we all know what life is like. Between work and marriage and parenting and house and life, I stopped. I stopped doing a lot of things that I love and - probably unsurprisingly - this had a major impact on my mental health.

I started reading again late last year. It has been a little mind-blowing how something as simple as reading a book can make such a huge difference on how I feel. See also playing video games. I understand the logic and that it's not about the book or the game but about finding time to spend on myself and have fun.

I started reading the Supernatural tie-in novels - they're not great books but they're easy to read and I really enjoy them. I've also got the Leverage and The Librarians books on my TBR and I've been eyeing the Stargate ones which I've never read. I also want to pick up some of the classic science-fiction and fantasy I used to love when I was younger, the ones that introduced me to the genres - Tolkien, Asimov, Heinlein, Brooks, Eddings, Feist, Goodkind, Jordan, Clarke, Verne, Wells.

And I know there's so much newer fantasy and sci-fi that I haven't read, and even more that I don't even know about. Starting with what I know I love seems to me to be the best, and then let the magical algorithms of goodreads recommend things to be based on that.

I'm excited to see what else I discover!

I don't know if Music Monday is still a thing but I've always enjoyed sharing the music I love and my love for it so I'm going to be continuing it here!

My first track, quite fittingly, is the song that inspired my username. Nothin' But Cowboy Boots by Blue County. I don't remember how or where I first heard Blue County's music but it was back in the 2000s and I've loved them ever since. I was lucky enough to get to see them live, acoustic, twice just before the pandemic and I think I fell in love with their music even more.

Blue County, for anyone who doesn't know, was an American country music duo composed of actor-singers Aaron Benward and Scott Reeves. They had hits in the US with songs like Good Little Girls, That's Cool, That Summer Song and my favourite Nothin' But Cowboy Boots.

I don't know how I, in my late 20s, in the UK and very much not a country fan first heard their music. I was listening to a lot of Kane and co back then still so maybe through them? But I genuinely don't know. I love the song though, the story and the imagery it tells. And now I'm thinking about it, I wonder if any fanfics have been written using it. With a lyric like
I came home late tonight
you just smiled at my surprise
I see you comin' down the hall
In nothin'
Oh nothin' but cowboy boots
surely someone must have written it and hopefully in a fandom I love

I have rambled enough so I shall now share the song with you:

I have no idea where the last 10 days have gone. I had plans. I knew what I was going to post about. I was excited for the [personal profile] snowflake challenge to start... and then somehow it's the 10th, I haven't posted this year and what was supposed to be a fun new start is already stressing me out.

And that's not what I want.

I'm going to take a deep breath, let it out slowly, count to 10, and centre myself. And start again.

Life is starting to settle back down again. We're all recovered from the plague, Blair had a fantastic birthday and we're talking now about redecorating his room into a new space theme. Blaze & I are back to work. Blair & Eliot are back to school. 2023 is finding its feet and getting back to normal.

I'm now going to jump in feet first with the Snowflake Challenge and the first prompt is In your own space, update your fandom information! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.. I have an introductory sticky post which covers most of the basics which can be found https://nothingbutcowboyboots.dreamwidth.org/496.html

  • Current Passion Supernatural, Leverage, The Librarians, Marvel, DC, Doctor Who, Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate etc. And pretty much anything with Mario in it. I've been playing a lot of classic NES games on the Switch, a lot of the original Donkey Kong and can I just say I'm fucking terrible at it

  • Where to Find Me: right now, only really here. I have a Twitter but I'm still not entirely sure what the point of it is.

  • Anything Else: I'm a queer transmasc non-binary person, so if this bothers you, please DNI. This also goes for minors - my kids are the only youngsters I'm particularly interested in interacting with and this is a NSFW (but safe for all)space
I'm a pretty open book with no filter, I'll answer anything so if there's some burning question you have, feel free to shout out

  • Next up, I go and comment on everyone else's introductions. This is a little nerve-wracking, wish me luck?

Like many people, part of me is going to be very very glad to see the back of 2022. I've seen various memes on social media of 'no-one claim 2023 as their year, we're all going to walk in real slow' which definitely sums up a lot of my feelings on it.

But I've also done a lot of healing and recovery this year and I'm feeling so much more confident in myself as a person. I'm looking forward to carrying that energy into 2023 and continuing with it.

There will be more laughter, more family time, more reading, more gaming, more tv/movies - more of everything I love. That's pretty much my only goal for 2023. Spend time with the people I love, doing the things I love.

I'm also pleased to report that we're all finally feeling better. Christmas was very sedate because while we were all starting to recover, we were completely exhausted. I don't think there was more than an hour when all 4 of us were awake but it was very comfortable, if nothing else.

We have no New Year's plans this year - other than the Countdown in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. I think it's going to just be another relaxing day/evening/night, pop some movies on and just chill.

Tomorrow is Blair's birthday. My little boy is going to be a teenager. I'm not entirely sure how that's happened. I'm going to be the parent of a teenager. He's really into all things space-related right now - he got a telescope for Christmas - and part of his birthday present is one of those galaxy projectors and some planets string lights for his bedroom.

Hey y'all, I didn't mean to post and then drop off the face of the Earth like that, my apologies. We've all had the winter vomiting bug, and it's just been cycling around us all. It's been so much fun as I'm sure you can imagine. And as if that wasn't enough, Blair the over-achieving 12 year old, also went and got an ear infection and tonsillitis as well.

We're slowly on the road to recovery, I'm still pretty exhausted so it's going to be a very quiet Christmas I think. I'm honestly not sure how much I'll be online for another few days at least.

So in the mean time - MERRY CHRISTMAS!

This evening Blair & Eliot asked to watch some classic Doctor Who. This is not something Blaze and I are ever going to complain about. They love new Who and have never seen any of the old stuff, generally turning their noses up and certainly not interested in anything in black & white. I've wanted to share it with them but wasn't going to force it on them if they didn't want to watch it.

I grew up with Doctor Who. To show my age, Tom Baker was my first doctor and along with Jon Pertwee remains my favourite. Although I do adore all of them. So I was thrilled when they asked about watching some of the old stuff. We talked about what to watch and decided to go all the way back to the beginning.

I made us a delicious (faux)chicken korma - recipe available on request - and we settled down with An Unearthly Child. And I'm pleased to report they thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd forgotten what a contradiction Susan is - one the one hand so smart, on the other so protected by her grandfather. And the kidnapping of the teachers. The tone is so different, it's much more of a serious proper BBC drama, the plot a little laughable at times but somehow still managing to be a little nerve-wracking and scary at places. Definitely very different to what the kids are used to but they've expressed an interest in watching more. So I'm calling it a resounding success!

And I need at least Doctor Who icon.
